New British military technology significantly reduces titanium production costs

Titanium has high strength, light weight, corrosion resistance and other characteristics, commonly used in submarines, fighter aircraft and other sophisticated defense equipment. However, the complexity of the production process and high cost limit the widespread use of this rare metal.
To this end, the Defense Science and Technology Laboratory cooperated with the University of Sheffield in the United Kingdom to develop a breakthrough titanium production process. The titanium powder can be made into parts in only two steps, and the mechanical properties of these parts and forged products are comparable. .
The new process can get rid of the previous 40 processes of titanium production method, which greatly saves time and cost. Matthew Lunt, chief materials scientist at the Defense Technology Laboratory, said that this innovation can reduce the production cost of titanium parts by 50%, making it more suitable for military equipment such as submarines and armored vehicles.
